Matching Patients with Alternate Treatments for Asthma

KEY POINT

While most patients with asthma can be managed acceptably with standard agents, a few individuals benefit from therapy with medications as diverse as methotrexate, loop diuretics, and inhaled heparin. Some of these alternate treatments for asthma have a fair amount of clinical data to support their use, but clinicians should be certain that standard medications have not worked before advancing to other agents.
