Strategies for conception in HIV-discordant couples

KEY POINT

A new report from CDC outlines strategies for HIV-discordant couples (i.e., uninfected female, infected male) who wish to conceive. Strategies include intercourse without a condom around the time of ovulation with highly active antiretroviral therapy for the male (HAART) and preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the female, or use of HAART and PrEP in conjunction with washing of the male’s sperm to remove HIV cells, followed by intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
