Reaching Lipid Goals: Combination Therapy Needed for Many Patients with Diabetes

KEY POINT

Achieving the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol targets established by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) in its Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) will be difficult for many patients with diabetes, according to a recent analysis of interviews from Vermont. At least 25% of patients with diabetes will require more than two lipid-lowering medications to reach the July 2004 NCEP recommendations established for very-high-risk patients.
