Counsel patients taking IBD meds about sun exposure, protection

KEY POINT

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) compared with those without IBD, according to a recent study. A further analysis of medication use in these patients revealed increased risk of melanoma and NMSC in patients taking biologic anti–tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) and thiopurine medications, respectively.
