The Joint Commission releases new antimicrobial stewardship standard

KEY POINT

In June, the Joint Commission released a new antimicrobial stewardship standard that will become effective on January 1, 2017, and focused on key elements such as education of hospital staff about antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship practices, education of patients on appropriate use of antibiotics, development of a multidisciplinary antibiotic stewardship team, antibiotic protocol utilization, and appropriate monitoring.
