Linezolid Adds Important Agent for Difficult-to-Treat Infections

KEY POINT

The first agent in a completely new class of antibiotics—linezolid (Zyvox—Pharmacia)— is indicated for treatment of problematic gram-positive pathogens. The antibiotic, with both injectable and oral dosage forms, is approved for treating nosocomial (hospital-acquired) pneumonia, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).
