Select antibiotics linked to increased risk of congenital malformations


Use of clindamycin, doxycycline, quinolones, macrolides, and penicillin (i.e., phenoxymethylpenicillin) during the first trimester of pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations, whereas use of amoxicillin, cephalosporins, and nitrofurantoin did not increase this risk, according to results of a Canadian population-based cohort study.
