Updated report on Clostridium difficile released

KEY POINT

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released an updated report on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of Clostridium difficile. The authors concluded that nucleic acid amplification tests have high sensitivity and specificity to detect this pathogen, vancomycin is more effective than metronidazole for initial treatment, fidaxomicin (Dificid—Merck) is more effective than vancomycin for prevention of recurrent disease, and some evidence exists for fecal microbiota transplantation and probiotics.
